Treating the person, not just the disease

Integrative approach to enhance natural healing, restore health  and improve quality of life

    WHAT IT IS

If you are diagnosed with cancer there are cancer support treatment programs which may enhance the body’s ability to fight cancer and help the traditional cancer treatments work effectively. The goal of integrative medicine is to work with the patient as the center of the medical team and combine both traditional and complementary treatments to restore the patient to a better state of health and improve the quality of life. Whereas traditional medicine will focus on treating the tumor, the holistic approach is to focus on the patient. The NIHA integrative medical approach endorses the conventional recommendations for necessary surgery, for example, to remove a tumor, then places the focus on supporting the patient with safe, complementary therapies. The integrative physician provides support and specific therapies in conjunction with the primary care physician to enhance the patient’s quality of life while undergoing treatment.

NIHA'S Integrative, Holistic Approach to Cancer Support

The goal of the integrative, holistic doctor is to support the body's fight against cancer, strengthen the immune system, and change the environment of the body so that it does not support the growth of cancer. Using the best of complementary and alternative medicine, the patient is supported with safe, non-toxic therapies and recommendations to modify the diet, detoxify the body, correct nutritional deficiencies, stimulate the immune system, and make lifestyle changes to enhance wellness and to spiritually embrace wellness. Most importantly, the patient is an active participant in the process.

    WHAT TO EXPECT

A comprehensive evaluation and patient assessment is the first step. Documentation of cancer provided by the patient, complete blood work, hair analysis for toxic metals and other assessments gives the doctor a holistic view of the patient. There are functional assessment tests that can be useful to those with cancer to help identify and understand what is not functioning properly within the body. The body’s ability to heal may be enhanced by safe, non-invasive therapies:

    • Stimulation and Support of the Immune System
    • Proper Nutrition and Nutritional Supplementation
    • Detoxification
    • Vitamin and Mineral Supplements
    • Enzyme Therapy
    • IV Vitamin/Mineral Therapy
    • Herbal Therapy

All these therapies can work to strengthen the immune system and modulate cell division. These are non-invasive, non-toxic options that have little risk of harm to the patient and may improve the quality of life by increasing energy, appetite, and strength while fighting the disease. The program is tailored to the needs of the patient and may include the following recommendations:

    I. Modify the Diet
Healthy nutrition and a healthy lifestyle are important to support the body as a patient undergoes chemotherapy or radiation. An important thing to do is to eliminate sugar, processed foods, white flour, and hydrogenated fats. Studies have suggested that our modern diet of high sugar and highly processed foods can contribute to an environment within the body that is more friendly to cancer growth.
The goal is to support the immune system through our diet with healthy, nutrient dense foods, good fats, vitamin rich vegetables and fruits, lean meats and fish, and other whole foods.
Proper nutrition can enhance the immune system and help patients through the negative side effects of chemotherapy and radiation.
Modified vegetarian diet, no sugar, no refined carbohydrates, based on the book, Beating Cancer with Nutrition

    II. Detoxify the Body
In order for other therapies to work and enhance the immune system, we need to detoxify the liver and bowel. This is accomplished by:
    Detecting and eliminating heavy metals
Eliminating chronic infections such as yeast candidiasis
Detecting and eliminating food and environmental allergies
    A course of detox max
Restoring natural flora to the bowel via probiotics
Restoring Omega 3’s using fish oil flaxseed oil

    III. Correct Nutritional Deficiencies
Deficiencies must first be detected from blood work and then corrected with IV and/or oral supplements. This also may help the patient better tolerate chemotherapy and radiation.
    High dose medical grade supplements
    Vitamin C, E, zinc, anti-oxidants, co-enzyme Q 10, potassium

IV. Stimulate and Support -the Immune System
A course of IV vitamins, minerals, including Vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, Folic acid and B complex
Herbs such as essiac, graviola, N-tense (a rain forest herb)
Glyconutrients, selective ‘super carbohydrates’ with healing properties

    V. Make Lifestyle Changes
    Proper daily exercise
Stress reduction through exercise, meditation, family support
    Cessation of smoking
    Psychological support
    Positive affirmation
