An osteopath or D.O. is a physician in the same way that an M.D. is a physician. Osteopaths learn, in addition to the medical training, how to work with muscles, bones, and other body tissues. The mobilization is often similar to what many might recognize as chiropractic treatment.
The methods and techniques vary from 'high velocity low amplitude' or what patients sometimes call 'crack and pop' technique to extremely soft and gentle techniques. The technique chosen depends on the combination of what is needed and the patient's desires. Philosophically, the approach is one of looking for the root cause of the problem and addressing that as opposed to only treating the area that hurts or the 'result of the problem'.
