Breast Health and Thermography
|
|
A simulation of a thermographic exam shows a known malignancy in the right breast (see red area over breast). One advantage of thermography is that it is like a glimpse into the future. It is a risk assessment tool and as such, it can give us an idea of where our breast health is headed. We can monitor for heat and vascular pattern changes over time and see if an area is developing an increasingly unhealthy appearance over time. Conversely, we can monitor to see if breast health is improving over time (usually as a result of lifestyle changes or from therapy), or if the patterns show no changes over time.
At NIHA, we offer two levels of thermographic imaging. A Full Breast Thermography consists of nine thermographic image views
followed by a cold challenge and then a repeat of the nine views. The
data is then sent for analysis to a certified thermography
interpreter. A Basic Breast Thermography is used to give a
glimpse of what the Full Breast Thermography might look like. It consists of three
thermographic image views and is meant to give a basic idea of the
breast health. One can typically see if the pattern is basically
healthy, unhealthy or somewhere in between. A full scan can follow.
Both full and basic breast scans can provide baseline images which can
be used to compare with future images to monitor for changes. For more
