WHAT IT IS

Autism is a complex developmental disorder that typically appears during the first three years of life, impacting development in all areas, especially social interaction and communication skills. Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning that it can manifest itself in forms ranging from mild to severe. Doctors assign different diagnoses at varying degrees of severity.

The Autism Spectrum looks like this:

Aspergers
Pervasive Dev. Delay (PDD)
PDD- Not Otherwise Specified (NOS)
Autism
Least severe
More severe
Most severe

In recent years, researchers have noted a marked increase in the numbers of children on the autism spectrum. Currently 1 out of 91 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, with a higher incidence of boys affected. Integrative, holistic practitioners believe that an environmental trigger is a factor in genetically susceptible families. The environmental factor is key to understanding the rise in the numbers of affected children.

NIHA'S Integrative, Holistic Approach to Autism

NIHA believes that no single trigger causes autism, and doctors thus treat each case individually, and with an integrative, holistic approach. A good place to start is with laboratory testing, which can point to underlying conditions that are contributing to a child's unique symptoms.

Laboratory testing can be done to assess :

  • - Metabolic disorders
  • - Nutrient deficiencies
  • - Food allergies and sensitivities
  • - Digestive imbalances
  • - Immune dysfunction
  • - Toxicity levels, heavy metals, particularly mercury
  • - Bacterial and viral infections

The correction of these physical problems creates a healthier internal environment in a child's body, which may allow recommended sensory, motor, educational and behavioral therapies to work more effectively.

Integrative and holistic treatment for autism spectrum disorder is always adapted for each patient. The goal of treatment is to support the whole body, immune and neurological systems with natural substances.

Treatment may include:

  • - Targeted Nutritional counseling, such as special diets to increase good nutrition and eliminate problematic substances, such as gluten and casein, proteins that can aggravate behavior.
  • - A Comprehensive Detoxification Program to eliminate heavy metals and toxic chemicals
  • - Essential fatty acid balancing to assure that a patient is ingesting the right amounts of omega 3, omega 6 and omega 9 fats.

- Nutritional and Natural supplements to correct imbalances

  • - Botanical medicine
  • - Biological dentistry and airway analysis in a mercury free practice
  • - A Home - Health analysis, including mold and electro-magnetic field (EMF) testing, to create a toxic-free environment for healing
  • - Family Oriented lifestyle coaching to mitigate stressors, including sleep deprivation and inter-generational issues.

Preventing Autism Spectrum Disorders

  • - Pre-conception planning and counseling
  • - Pre and post-natal diet and lifestyle coaching for healthy infant care
