My theme: The Substance of Hope
Hello, I am Ralph Wilson. My traditional training began in the University of Michigan Medical School, 1970, toward the M.D. degree. After completing a year the effects of an automobile accident and experimental mercury dental fillings led me to choose a personal healing journey, discovering ways to integrate western medicine with other approaches to healthy living and health improvement. The keys to my health recovery were: A) recognizing and treating toxic dental conditions, and, B) experiencing Homeopathy and “Integrative Medicine” approaches to remove restrictions to healthy function.
I am a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and a member of Mensa. I apply my skills to help the cause of world healing. I received my N.D. degree in 1989 from Bastyr University, in Seattle, WA, a four-year naturopathic medical school that trains doctors for primary care using natural medicines. At Bastyr, I completed my master's degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (including study in China) in 1995. I served as adjunct faculty in physical examination and office clinical procedures including chelation, injection therapies and neural therapy, and completed their year-long graduate program in Spirituality, Health and Medicine, which had a pastoral counseling and mental health focus. During 2000, I trained at the American Academy of Neural Therapy, and there I met Mark McClure, DDS, Doctor of Integrative Medicine. His enthusiastic description of National Integrated Health Associates inspired me to become a NIHA associate.
More information on my background is online at the clinic internet site.

SUPPORT FOR BIOLOGICAL DENTISTRY and INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE
For 20 years I have committed my energies to help people recover from the effects of dental conditions on their bodies and minds. Past President of the Association of Health and Dental Awareness Professionals; DAMS coordinator (Dental Amalgam Mercury Syndrome). I served on the Board of Directors of the Well Mind Association (supporters of the Orthomolecular Psychiatry of Abram Hoffer, M.D.). I have seen lives destroyed by dental mercury and damage done by root canal fillings and extraction socket degeneration. I also know people who are gradually reclaiming their health after learning about the dental connections to health of body and mind. It is gratifying to see improvement in chronic, often devastating and puzzling conditions after people use a blend of approaches such as are offered at NIHA.

1. Naturopathic Care at NIHA
My doctorate degree is in naturopathic medicine. Integrating mainstream and holistic care, my practice can serve people of all ages. My practice is not limited by the mainstream diagnosis label a patient may have received from a medical physician. I use a variety of approaches to help people use their inborn self-healing energy. See the five-level "Holistic Integrated Map (Model) to Health and Healing", elsewhere on the web site. As part of the team at NIHA, I am dedicated to giving people increased options for cleansing and healing of body and mind.
Naturopathy in the District of Columbia:
The practice of naturopathic medicine in the District of Columbia is undergoing a gradual evolution. In DC there are practitioners who have graduated from the four-year schools who train primary care Naturopathic Physicians, and there are practitioners who took other training and have registered as naturopath/N.D.s. While at National Integrated Health Associates I work with a number of skilled practitioners who have taken the only option available---under the umbrella designation mandated by the registration process available in the District they have registered as "N.D." or naturopathic doctor. My practice at NIHA as a graduate of a four-year naturopathic medical school is based on the depth of training I have received as a Naturopathic Physician. I configure my practice to conform to D.C. regulations. When my patients need procedures and prescriptions that require a medical license, I arrange a consultation with a NIHA medical doctor.
Scope of Practice of my Naturopathic Care in DC:
I offer what I call an eclectic Naturopathic Second Opinion. I particularly appreciate the fact that naturopathic physicians in Washington DC have practice guidelines that respect our trust in the body's innate ability to heal itself. I do not treat specific named medical diseases. The recommendations I give are aimed at removing blocks to self-healing; I help you learn your strengths and challenges; I help you find your own inner balance, physical-chemical-mental, so your body can heal itself. This means that I when I agree to work with a patient it does not matter what is their official mainstream medical diagnosis. I find that usually there is some kind of imbalance in overall health and I work with the individual so they can regain balance. I do not use prescription drugs. My recommendations and homeopathic/ herbal prescriptions center on natural approaches that support the body's innate ability to heal itself. For more information, see the "Modalities" section.
2. Functional Assessment
Functional testing is described as a newly developing form of medical assessment embraced by holistic and alternative practitioners, and slowly being incorporated into the medical mainstream. Functional tests help determine how the body is functioning, as opposed to other medical test and imaging tools which measure pathological breakdown and disease. Functional changes in a person’s physiology occur long before the symptoms of diseases are manifest. This means that functional testing techniques are early warning tests that are ideal for prevention-oriented doctors and professionals concerned about finding the root cause of the patient’s problem.
Functional assessments can be very helpful in showing the patient how their body is functioning now (including strengths as well as challenges), and will show improvements over the course of treatment.
3. Biological Dentistry Support
Here at NIHA I help the dental physicians as they put together integrative medicine programs for their patients. This may include functional assessment testing to help assess a person’s basic self-healing abilities, or treatments that help restore health. Integrating Mainstream medicine and Biological Dentistry has been a core goal of my practice for many years. I have an active interest in the development of the field of Biological Dentistry. As a naturopathic physician it is clear to me that some of the most potent "obstacles to cure" of my patients are of dental origin. I was a leader of the DAMS dental support group in Seattle. I have attended seminars on "Integrating the Sciences of Dentistry and Medicine".
4. Autonomic Nervous System Support
The Autonomic Nervous System is essential to human life. The ANS is the silent part of your nervous system that manages things such as temperature, heart rate, blood vessel dilation, and much more. It could be called your Inner Protector. Since I took my oath as a naturopathic physician, I have sought to learn the basics of life, health, illness, treatment and reclamation of health. In the last several years I have seen the increase of scientific knowledge about how the body heals itself, and much of this deals with functions of the Autonomic Nervous System.
When I examine health care techniques used by Holistic / Alternative Medicine practitioners (some techniques have been used for thousands of years), it is clear to me that we now are uncovering the scientific explanation of treatments that seemed mysterious in the past. I see this as describing the ANS. Mainstream medicine is now, for example, beginning to embrace breathing techniques known to yogis for centuries which affect autonomic function. Heart Rate Variability testing and biofeedback are a couple of ways to assess ANS activity. The most important area of ANS research in my opinion [one that is being widely examined by practitioners across the country] is the relationship of acupuncture meridian energy flow lines to several aspects of health, including muscles, digestion, and even emotions. Working with the "acumeridian" system is a central part of the treatments used by many of the NIHA practitioners. For many years I have studied and used different meridian-based ways of helping people. I have trained with Dr. Klinghardt, and Dr. McClure through Capital University classes.
Several of the modalities I use in my practice focus on assessing and helping the Autonomic Nervous System in its task of self-regulation. I have been involved in clinical research with biofeedback technology to monitor the ANS. I was a principal investigator in a research project assessing the effects of autonomic stresses on the structure of the iris of the eye.
In a very real sense, the focus of my entire practice is to support the person’s ANS in regaining balance and effectively doing the work of self-healing. When a person's Autonomic Nervous System is functioning effectively a feeling of wellbeing and hope are more easily experienced.
Selected Services: See below: Acumeridian Therapies | Biofeedback | Counseling/Empowerment | Craniosacral Therapy | Functional Assessment | Integrative Homeopathy | Therapeutic Education | Other
Acumeridian Therapies
Auricular Acupuncture (without needles).
ETPS (Electro Therapeutic Point Stimulation).
SCENAR muscle relaxation and re-education (which includes a biofeedback approach) for pain management. NES-Professional® biophysics scan and treatment with "Infoceuticals" that affect the meridian energies. Other as appropriate: Reflexology, acupressure, etc.
Biofeedback; Heart Rate Variability
RSA (Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia) technology allows me to coach you to "turn on" your parasympathetic nervous system; this is part of your Autonomic Nervous System. I can give you resources for self-care that you can do at home. Other biofeedback technologies include Autonomic Response Testing, SCENAR and the NES-Professional biophysics scan. Some practitioners claim that simple psychological methods augmented by biofeedback "can train your mind to make emotional and physical pain disappear..." This could be called "a technology of Hope." We can discuss how these might become part of your integrative care program.
Counseling/Empowerment, Brain Health, Eye Movement Therapies
I work with people who want to understand their "health puzzles" and know more about their body, mind and spirit. I explore structure and function to present expanded options for changing your life on a whole-person basis. I offer unique insights and techniques that help you sidestep "mental illness labels" and discover an alternate path to self-control and self-appreciation. Scientific naturopathy considers allergies/hypersensitivities, Autonomic Nervous System function, and excesses or deficiencies that affect mind and body. I may also use mind-body correlations from Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, and the New Understanding of the Natural World that accompanies Homeopathic Medicine.
My eclectic support of mental and physical health may also integrate body psychotherapy, eye movement and mental field "tapping," craniosacral therapy, insight counseling, neuro-emotional iridology and various biofeedback technologies. I practice in an integrative medicine clinic, providing referrals if necessary to our medical doctors, biological dentists, chiropractor, massage therapists and others.
I have a depth of experience with creating new options to support a range of concerns such as enhancing wellness, child/adolescent performance, autism, cancer and chronic illness, or end-of-life issues. Employing special techniques to enhance confidentiality I can be your advocate as you face major life issues.
A variety of options for assessing and enhancing Autonomic Nervous System function help me make recommendations that can bring the chance to improve the feeling of wellbeing and to experience the hope of health improvement.
I am a member of the DC Area Guild of Body Psychotherapists. Craniosacral therapy and Somato-Emotional Release are a couple of the many body-mind approaches to helping the mind by working with the body.
Biofeedback and Heart Rate Variability assessment are options to help with what is being called "regulated emotional responding." Some practitioners claim that simple psychological methods "can train your mind to make emotional and physical pain disappear..." We can discuss how these might become part of your integrative care program.
The brain effects of allergies and environmental sensitivities are sometimes major factors that decrease a person's feeling of wellness, and have been associated with hyperactivity and other conditions. There have been observations that "mercury psychosis" ("Mad Hatter's Disease") may affect a person's behavior.
Sometimes I include needle-free auricular treatment: Acupoint stimulation of the ear, one school of teaching calls this Auriculotherapy. "Chinese medicine has been treating mental-emotional complaints for all of its more than two-thousand-year history" -- Bob Flaws, acupuncturist, educator, founder of Blue Poppy Press, Inc. Another important school of training helps demonstrate the intricate connections between flow of energies in the body and mind: The Five Element Acupuncture approach; I used this while in acupuncture school and point to it as a good way to see the potential for acumeridian influence on wellness and mind/body wholeness.
I am a former member of the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology, and appreciate their incorporation of techniques that we use here at NIHA such as eye movement and acumeridian "tapping" techniques. Note: When you visit their web site please be aware that they are in the early stages of perceiving the importance of body energies that were originally studied by the doctors of Traditional Chinese Medicine; these are originally members of the western psychology field who are trying to stand in both camps. Please do not rely solely on the practitioners you may encounter after visiting their web site. The NIHA integrative team can deliver a much more robust program of individualized care than can their members. Still, I do appreciate them for their boldness in developing the work as far as they understand it.
I am a member of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors to honor the intimate association of body, mind and spirit and the need to serve each patient with respect for their preference for religion or philosophy.
I have joined the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians in part because of the impact that diagnoses of cancers may have on some people and their questions about major life issues.
I have joined the Institute of Noetic Sciences because of their research into important aspects of human health and living a healthy life in the modern world; this is helping increase scientific knowledge of treatments that are important for people with debilitating and often puzzling conditions.
Continuing Education is important, and I enhance my counseling skills by attending Family Constellation Work workshops (I have met Bert Hellinger and Hunter Beaumont). There are several skilled Constellation Facilitators in the DC area, check the NIHA events area for possible upcoming events.
Homeopathy and Counseling: Regarding the mind-body aspect of counseling, the work of homeopath Rajan Sankaran is an important part of the Integrative Homeopathy system; Sankaran's work is the basis for "Cognitive Homeopathy" (found elsewhere on the internet).
Craniosacral Therapy
This is my program of Cranial Bio-Dynamics. It is the combination of techniques from Dr. John Upledger's training combined with the Cranial Fluid Dynamics of Dr. Solihin Thom, and then integrated with my knowledge of obstacles to self-healing, including the effect of dental conditions on health. Craniosacral therapy provides a direct assessment of the Autonomic Nervous System and provides the opportunity for freeing up of the body's innate healing ability. It is a good addition as part of the Integrative Homeopathy program, and can be used to support the integrative treatment of any health concern.
I appreciate the comments of Dr. Upledger concerning, "Giving Patients False Hope?": Someone recently asked me if I think CranioSacral Therapists give patients false hope. That’s an excellent question that I’d like to address here.
It is my belief that everyone comes to a particular disease process in a unique way. Therefore, people with essentially the same diagnostic label may respond very differently to CST. Given this variation and highly individual response to therapy, we must always assume that it may be possible to obtain positive results.
While we must remain cautious not to have or to give anyone unrealistic expectations, we should never limit what might be possible. We simply apply our work to the compensatory mechanisms in the body and observe how the body self-
corrects or rebalances. It is the response of the body that informs our subsequent sessions.
So do we give patients false hope? Not at all. We give them hope.
Heart Rate Variability Testing
Heart Rate Variability is a way of assessing your Autonomic Nervous System. This is your own unique response, giving us vital information about your heart’s electrical activity and how your ANS is functioning to control that activity at rest and under stress. When we repeat this test in the future we will be able to monitor improvement in your body’s ability to self-regulate in response to stresses.
Homeopathy -- Integrative Homeopathy
I am trained in "classical homeopathy" and have gained a lot by continued study in ways to integrate the use of homeopathic medicines (called "remedies") into overall programs of care for individual patients. The more I study CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) and the work of Integrative Medicine practitioners, the more I appreciate how scientific principles can reveal the natural laws that are behind the actions of homeopathic remedies.
"Acute Prescribing" is sometimes what I choose. However, the system that I use to guide all homeopathic recommendations and combine them with other techniques is Integrative Homeopathy. This is what I call "The Original Classical Homeopathy," following the principles of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. This is based on the Medical Heilkunst model described as "Dr. Hahnemann's complete medical system," introduced in his opus, das Organon Der Heilkunst. This system includes three aspects: 1) Supportive "Regimen" treatments that include biological dentistry, structural alignment, cranio-sacral therapy, SCENAR, diet and lifestyle, etc. 2) Homeopathic remedies to support the person's innate healthy baseline constitutional archetype and to remove energy-based "Diseases" described in homeopathic literature as Chronic Miasms and Chthonic Diseases, and 3) Therapeutic Education to teach how patients can take control to help improve health of mind and body. More information is available at Homeopathy.com. Regarding mental health, wellness and counseling: these are a major focus of homeopath Rajan Sankaran whose example is an important part of the Integrative Homeopathy model; his work is the basis for "Cognitive Homeopathy" (found elsewhere on the internet).
Iridology
Physical iridology, and also Neuro-Behavioral iridology. Analysis of the pupil, "autonomic nerve wreath" and more gives a very informative assessment. I am a member of the Canadian Neuro-optic Research Institute. I describe iridology as being important in a similar way to the use of a stethoscope. I use it as an adjunct to learning more about the individual but not for making diagnoses. My conservative iridology training at Bastyr University laid the foundation for my current use of it to gain clues to the energies coursing through the body during development in the womb. Recent reports from Europe are intriguing concerning the variations that may occur from autonomic stress; I was the principal investigator in an IRB study of an iris sign that may indicate change caused by severe autonomic nervous system stress. I generally offer iridology as part of a larger integrative context and not as a stand-alone assessment; I do not make treatment programs based only on iris findings.
Nutrition Programs
As part of Naturopathic Care I often create an individualized nutrition program for my patient. As part of the Integrative Homeopathy program of self-discovery and empowerment, this may begin with several options for "typology" recommendations, and then move toward your direct learning of your own "natural diet." This is the one best suited for you with your unique genetics, background and life energy. These options can include Ayurvedic body type, ABO blood type and/or other considerations. The program often includes a printed chart of foods for the patient to include and ones to avoid during integrative treatment.
When it is possible, I encourage my patients to undergo the more extensive Metabolic Typing assessment with the NIHA Nutritionist. Therapeutic Nutrition is a core tool of naturopathic physicians, and this includes food and how it is eaten as well as taking nutritional supplements. I have worked as the colon hydrotherapist in an Ayurvedic clinic, and have a deep respect for the role of nutrition in the health of the bowel; here at NIHA I support our colon hydrotherapy program.
Physical Bodywork Therapies
As a stand-alone treatment, or as part of an overall visit that uses several techniques, bodywork treatments can be powerful boosts to the body’s self-healing abilities. I am trained in Naturopathic Manipulation. Deep tissue massage. Cranio-Sacral therapy. Infrasound device. I am certified in Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field therapy.
SCENAR
In 2003, I obtained certification in SCENAR, an electro-cybernetic technology from Russia, and am continuing to upgrade my skills with this unique device. We use it at NIHA as a tool to help with muscle relaxation and re-education, which I describe as an important part of Autonomic Nervous System function. I use the Tennant Biomodulator version of the "SCENAR" technology (Senergy Medical Group). This can be an effective addition to a treatment program with Integrative Homeopathy; Medical Heilkunst practitioners report that SCENAR has aided the flow of energies in the body's chakra system and helped remove the "armoring" that is described by Reichian practitioners.
Therapeutic Education
Knowledge can be powerfully effective in bringing about change in your life. The energy you invest in learning about how your body functions in health and under stress, and in learning about options for health support can help you make choices that will lead to improved health. I assist you in choosing from the many available options in the field of integrative medicine. I also teach you self-care techniques that you can do at home. Workshops and public presentations are other ways I help to empower people toward better health.
