Practice Philosophy:
You can move more easily, more effectively- regardless of your age and health.
Areas of Focus:
Integrative Physical Health
FlexAware® and the Feldenkrais Method® are based on the way very young children learn and move, and help people of any age move more easily, comfortably, and effectively. Feldenkrais® is gentle and mostly non-verbal. FlexAware® is more dynamic and instructive, with benefits for strength, flexibility, cardiovascular health, and overall fitness.
I offer Individual sessions and a special class on FlexAware® Physical Health: Breathing, Sitting, and Walking.
About
Steven Shafarman studied with Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais between 1976 and 1983, and was Dr. Feldenkrais’ assistant and appointment secretary in 1981, the last time Feldenkrais was in the United States. Steven has taught in Europe, Israel, Australia, and Argentina, and is the author of five books, including Awareness Heals: the Feldenkrais Method for Dynamic Health.
During the 1990s, in response to his clients’ requests for advice about how to exercise, and concerned about the fact that many people who exercise have chronic pain or recurring injuries, Steven began to look more closely at exercise. He reviewed often-overlooked facts of anatomy, physiology, and neuroscience; reexamined the fact that young children are remarkably flexible and strong and have great stamina; and recognized the value of whole-body movements that are natural and comfortable. And he created FlexAware®.
He recently completed the first FlexAware® DVD and he has started to educate new teachers.(Awareness Heals and Steven’s FlexAware® Fitness DVD are available at NIHA.) Refer to his website for more information: FlexAwareFitness.com
