Chiropractic Techniques

Chiropractic manipulation

Chiropractic manipulation refers to a chiropractor applying manipulation to the vertebrae and joints of the body that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally. A manipulation is a thrust that is applied to the joint. Manipulation typically has an accompanying, audible release of gas (joint cavitation) that is caused by the release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, which releases joint pressure. There is a relieving sensation most of the time, although minor discomfort may occur if the surrounding muscles are in spasm or the patient tenses up during this chiropractic care.
Chiropractic manipulation (also known as chiropractic adjustment or spinal manipulation), is a common therapeutic treatment for a variety of physical pain and physical health conditions.
The objective of this chiropractic treatment is to restore normal function to the spine and all other areas that contribute to physical dysfunction. This results in an increased range of motion reduced nerve irritability and improved function.
There are many different manipulative techniques that can be utilized in chiropractic to fit the individual. The number of chiropractic treatments required for the particular patient varies significantly due to the degree of the injury and chronicity.

Soft tissue therapy (STT)

STT is the assessment, treatment and management of soft tissue injury, pain and dysfunction primarily of the neuromusculoskeletal system. The specific treatment application of an ache, pain, or injury will be solely reliant on the conclusions reached by physical assessments. Any number of treatment techniques may be used to achieve optimal treatment results.

Techniques Dr. Roskosky uses are the following:
• Active Release Technique (ART): ART is most commonly used to treat conditions related to adhesions or scar tissue. The technique involves getting the patient to actively move while the soft tissues have pressure applied to restore function of that area and decrease pain. Specific conditions that can be treated with ART include headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome other peripheral nerve entrapments, shin splints, sciatica, TMJ, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis and other soft tissue inflammatory disorders of the joints.
• Trigger Point Techniques provide relief from Myofascial Trigger points.
• Myofascial Therapy, that targets the muscle and fascial systems, promotes flexibility and mobility of the body's connective tissues. Likewise, it mobilizes fibrous adhesions and reduces the severity and sensitivity of scarring caused by injury or surgery.
• Cross friction massage which creates mobilization of adhesions between fascial layers, muscles, compartments and other soft tissues. Frictions are also thought to create an inflammatory response that instigates a focus to an injured area, thereby, promoting healing, especially in tendonous injuries
• PNF stretching (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) is used to decrease the tone in a muscle or muscle group that is tight.

Sports Performance and Injury

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a system that evaluates movement patterns that are keys to normal function. By screening these patterns, the FMS identifies functional limitations and asymmetries. These are issues that can reduce the effects of functional training and physical conditioning and distort body awareness.
This screen is used to develop a program to allow an athlete to have the most beneficial corrective exercises to restore mechanically sound movement patterns. This allows an athlete to perform better in their sport.
In a Selective Functional Movement Screen (SFMS) it allows a health practitioner to identify tissues that are impeding an athlete’s performance. Then the correct physical treatments and exercises can be applied to return an athlete more quickly to their sport
