VIDEO: Patient & Team Safety Protocols

NIHA'S ADDITIONAL SAFETY PROTOCOLS FOR COVID-19

  • Every patient and team member are screened for covid-19 symptoms/exposure and elevated temperature upon arrival.
  • Staff and patients will wear masks and if you forget to bring one, we will provide.                       temp_check
  • Patients are encouraged to wait in the car or lobby and call 202-237-7000 to check in.
  • Adult patients will come alone unless a companion is necessary. Pediatric patients may need both parents, please mention this when booking the appointment for doctor approval.
  • We have instituted contactless check-in and check-out.
  • Lobby and traffic patterns have been altered to accommodate 6 ft. social  distancing.  Please follow the marked areas for direction of patient flow and distancing.
  • Hand sanitizer is located throughout the center.
  • Each practitioner and team member will wear appropriate PPE (gowns, masks, gloves)  when interacting with patients.
  • Medical grade air purifiers are used throughout the center.
  • We use a high-grade Fogger with Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) at the beginning of day, middle of day and at closing. Known as nature’s germ killer, this kills 99.9% of virus. It is an oxidant produced by the body and is used by firefighters and paramedics to clean ambulances as well as by farmers for cleaning produce.
  • The water purification system in the dental area protects you, the dentist, and the environment.
  • Magazines, handouts, and toys have been removed.
  • In order to account for the new safety measures NIHA is implementing such as required PPE, upgraded safety equipment, and increased staff hours there will be an additional fee of  $15 added to your visit.

The building and property management processes to minimize transmissions includes:

  • Additional janitorial cleaning and sanitizing efforts in the lobby, elevators, restrooms, parking garage, floors, doors, and all contact points
  • Minimizing contact through marked travel paths and signage

Why We Are Using HOCl  FOGGER for Disinfection

What is HOCl?

HOCl is the scientific formula for hypochlorous acid, a weak acid similar to that of a mild citrus juice.                     HOCl fogger

HOCl is made naturally by white blood cells in all mammals for healing and protection.

HOCl is a powerful oxidant that is effective against invading bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

Generating HOCl by running electricity through a solution of saltwater was discovered in 1970s.

HOCl is now used in healthcare, food safety, water treatment, and general sanitation.

How does HOCL kill microbial pathogens?

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a neutrally charged molecule. Bacteria have negatively charged cell walls. Just like magnets, molecules with the same charge will repel each other. For example, the negatively charged molecule of bleach (OCl-) is repelled by bacterial cell walls. This is not the case with HOCl which is neutrally charged. HOCl easily penetrates bacterial cell walls. HOCl either oxidizes the cell walls killing the bacteria or enters through the cell walls and destroys the vital components inside the bacteria.

How effective is it at killing viruses?

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) has been researched and proven to be effective against many viruses.

What are the benefits?

Hypochlorous acid, unlike chlorine bleach, is 100% safe and non-irritant. If it gets on your skin or in your eyes, it will not burn. Even if it were accidentally ingested, it is completely harmless. Yet, it is 70-80 times more efficient at killing microbial pathogens than chlorine bleach.

How is hypochlorous acid used in hospitals?

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) can be used to sanitize linens. HOCl can replace toxic concentrated chemicals for cleaning and disinfecting rooms and common areas. HOCl can be applied via foggers to broadly disinfect rooms and the air. HOCl can be used in the hospital kitchen as a no-rinse sanitizer for produce, meat, poultry, and seafood. It can be used to clean and disinfect all contact surfaces and kitchenware. HOCl can be placed throughout hospitals in dispensers for hand sanitation.  HOCl Resource Information
