The First Dental Happy Visit

Baby teeth play a vital role in the growth, development and overall health of a child.  At Holistic Family Dentistry, we emphasize proper oral care and habit formation from the very beginning. Your child’s first tooth may appear as early as 6 months and we want you and your child to be ready for this milestone and the life-long journey of oral health it signifies.  We, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, recommend your first visit to the dentist within 6 months of the first tooth coming in (erupting), or by about 12 months of age.  By the time your child reaches his third birthday they will have all 20 of their primary teeth.

We recommend you schedule a “Happy Visit” to acquaint your child with our staff.  They will meet our dentist, take a ride in the chair, meet “Mr. Thirsty”, get their teeth examined, select something from the treasure box, and begin to establish a level of comfort with the dentist and office. This first visit is brief and we invite you to stay with your child. Some children may be anxious, and it may take more than one “Happy Visit” before they are comfortable.  We strive to make it a fun first experience, creating a positive association with the dentist, leading to a lifetime of oral health.

Your child will receive a comprehensive examination and cleaning at their first visit by the dentist.  We review the medical history to anticipate any dental complications or anomalies. We discuss nutrition and diet, habits that can affect growth, dental trauma preparation, home care and proper brushing, and develop a plan to ensure your child is on the road to optimal dental and overall health.

Preventive Maintenance Check Ups

At follow up preventive maintenance appointments the child will be seen by our hygienists for a complete dental cleaning and the dentist for a check-up.

If your child is older and has been to a dentist previously it is important for us to know what treatment they had.  Previous x-rays are helpful but it is not always necessary to have them forwarded to our office.  We do not take x-rays at every visit. However, if your child is prone to decay or is at an age of mixed dentition, i.e., has both baby teeth and adult teeth, it will be prudent to get a baseline x-ray. This can be discussed with the dentist at the time of the visit.

If there is anything you need to discuss with the dentist about previous history or you think the dentist needs to know about any behavioral issues your child may have with the visit, please inform the assistant, and this can be discussed with the dentist prior to the examination.

We recommend children get regular check-ups and cleanings, usually every 6 months.
