Adrenal Fatigue

The adrenal glands are tiny glands located on the upper part of the kidney. They secrete hormones and help us manage stress, maintain salt and water balance, metabolize carbohydrates and regulate blood sugar. The adrenal glands may become impaired, leading to adrenal insuffiency, due to prolonged periods of stress or long term cortisone therapy for arthritis or asthma.

In our very busy world, adrenal fatigue is a common issue related to long-term stress, poor diet, overwork, long commutes and poor quality or lack of sleep. When we are stressed, the adrenal glands release cortisol. With chronic, prolonged stress, the adrenal glands may not produce enough cortisol, leading to adrenal insufficiency.

Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue May Include:

Common symptoms are fatigue, body aches, unexplained weight loss or gain, low blood pressure, light headedness, thinning hair, insomnia and skin discoloration or more-

Adrenal Fatigue and Low Thyroid Testing and Treatment

These symptoms may be adrenal fatigue or low thyroid function. Using your symptoms and body temperature as a starting point, there are unique tools and specialty lab testing for adrenal function, adrenal insufficiency,  and hormones (DHEA, cortisol, progesterone, and more) to help distinguish if your symptoms are adrenal or thyroid, or a combination of both.

Adrenal fatigue is not widely recognized as a medical diagnosis but integrative physicians will treat based on comprehensive thyroid and adrenal lab test results and patient symptoms.

Holistic treatment for adrenal fatigue should include lifestyle changes such as high quality nutrition (vegetables, citrus, lean meats), stress management, high quality sleep, and appropriate supplements (Vitamin C, VItamin B-5, B-6, magnesium)  and/or medication if needed.
