What is Clomid?
Clomiphene is a medical preparation that stimulates the ovaries to mature eggs.
This remedy is used for the women who do not have regular or no ovulation and also who have polycystic ovaries or polycystic ovarian syndrome. This medication is also used in cases of unclear infertility.
The active substance of the medication is clomiphene citrate, which is an antiestrogen preparation taken in tablet form. This preparation raises 2 hormones which from one side cause stimulation of the ovaries and from the other side cause release of the egg.
First of all, the remedy causes your pituitary gland to produce more hormones that make the follicles mature (this is a follicle stimulating remedy) and your ovaries will produce a certain amount of eggs. When the follicles are mature, your pituitary gland releases a luteinizing hormone, which tells your follicles that it is ready to release a mature egg from the follicle and carry it away into one of your tubes. It is ovulation or ovulation.
The medicine is taken from the 3rd to the 5th day of the menstrual cycle. It should be taken for about five days. The ovulation occurs after the fifth or sixth tablet. The doctor must examine the patient with the help of sonography to determine not only whether the ovaries have a follicle, but also the amount of follicles and the degree of follicle maturity.
In most cases it is necessary to carry out max. from 3 to 6 cycles of medication. It gives a treatment with remedies from 1 to 2 months be necessary to have a regular ovulation. If after six months the medication is not successful, your doctor should start a new treatment.
If you have polycystic ovary syndrome, it means that this therapy does not suit you, because 15 to 40% of patients with PCOS are resistant to this medicine. This often happens in patients when they have a body mass index that is more than 25. If the patient decreases her body weight by about 5%, your chances of ovulation may increase.
If you have insulin resistance, the doctor prescribes the antidiabetic drug metformin. This remedy supports your response to clomiphene and may increase your chances of ovulation to be pregnant.
One can also take this medication as well as other infertility remedies before undergoing fertility therapy such as in vitro fertilization to stimulate the production of multiple eggs for this method of treatment. This preparation also helps men with a certain hormonal imbalance, men who have a low sperm count and poor sperm quality or sperm motility (that is, when the sperm has little or no ability to move).
The active substance is taken to stimulate ovulation 50 mg once a day before sleep, starting from 5th day of menstrual cycle during 5 days. If there is no effect, it is necessary to increase the dosage to 150 mg per day or extend the course to 10 days. You must take the medication as prescribed by your doctor. Do not increase the dose yourself.
If the patient misses a dose, she should take the tablet as soon as possible. When the time comes to take the next tablet, you must miss the missed dose. You must not double the dose in any case.
In case of overdose be sure to consult your doctor.
This preparation, like all preparations may have its side effects such as mood swings, abdominal pain, swelling of the ovaries, breast tenderness, wakefulness, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, headache, fatigue, depression, sometimes ovarian cysts, irritability, mass gain, dry cervical mucus, enlargement of the ovaries, fever, uterine bleeding, diarrhea. If you have any allergies to components of the preparation notify the doctor as it may cause various side effects.
In patients taking this remedy with other anti-infertility preparations such drugs as menotropin sometimes develop ovarian hyperstimulation syndromes although it rarely happens with this remedy. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndromes occur when patients respond too well to the drugs and get a lot of eggs. Usually they go away by themselves. However, it is necessary to be under medical control.
Infertility drugs are very successful in stimulating ovulation: more than 70% of patients ovulate in many cases during the first 3 months of treatment, and from 15 to 50% of patients get pregnant.
Of course, the success of the treatment is influenced by such conditions as the cycle time, sexual relationship, age, weight, speed, sperm mobility of your partner.
There are also some cases when taking such remedies when more than one egg is produced, which increases the possibility of multiple pregnancy. The patients using this remedy have 7% possibility to have twins and 1 out of 0.5% to have triplets.
Consult the doctor about all medicines you use as well as about all products of herbal origin if you take clomiphene citrate.
Keep this preparation at room temperature between 15-30 degrees C. Please protect the tablets from light and moisture.
