A Personal Wellness Assessment  is technology and data-reliant and it is notable that this data gives patients increased insight into what encourages people to get healthy and stay healthy.

Together with the physician, we can develop a Personal Wellness Plan to get you on the right track and move you toward optimal health and wellness.

What is Wellness Coaching?

Wellness coaching is a melding of the sciences of psychology, medicine and philosophy. It has evolved to become a service that caters to people looking for change and feel “stuck” or confused as to how to move themselves forward. It caters to people that are experiencing changes in their lives such as changes in career, changes in health, changes in relationships, or that are looking to redefine themselves , their health, their environment and enhance their personal growth.

Wellness Coaching to Enhance Your Personal Growth

Wellness coaching holds that each person is perfect just the way they are. YOU Drive the Process. The coach is not the expert on the client, the client is. The wellness coach meets each person where they are and motivates them to move forward towards goals that they define. It helps them assess what tools they have at their disposal or what tools they choose to acquire or develop to effect positive changes in their lives. It also helps to create awareness of lessons learned from less than successful attempts at change in a way that helps develop new ways to approach their problems.

The difference between wellness coaching and other modalities is that progress is totally client driven. Sessions are client centered and the topic for each session is chosen by the client. Strategies for change are customized to honor each individual’s unique sets of experiences, values and beliefs. “Homework “and awareness practices are agreed upon and the client is held accountable for attempting change in a timeline of their choosing.

Maximizing the Potential of the Individual

Halbert Dunn, M.D. is first credited with using the term wellness in the 1950s in a series of lectures at a Unitarian church in Arlington , Virginia. He advocated “high level wellness” and defined it as an integrated method of functioning which is oriented toward maximizing the potential of which the individual is capable. It requires the individual to maintain a continuum of balance and purposeful direction within the environment where he is functioning. Dunn also believed that “wellness is a direction in progress toward an ever higher potential of functioning.” He also described wellness as being much more than the absence of disease. In other words, one can be sick and obtain wellness and can be healthy but feel unwell.

Wellness coaching began in the 60s in California as an adjunctive therapy during the treatment of addiction. It was found that recovery was greatly enhanced and recidivism was decreased when patients found reasons to stop their addictions that resonated with their own unique values, visions and way of life.

Real and lasting change takes time, uncomfortable self-exploration, and is often times interrupted by setbacks. Your coach will be there beside you to cheer you on when you are discouraged, honor your efforts for change, remind you of lessons learned along the way, and hold you accountable in being true to yourself.

Wellness coaching is a partnership often referred to as “the dance”. Both coach and client take turns leading as needed but the client is always in control.
